Wilpattu National Park is the largest national park in Sri Lanka, covering roughly 131,000 hectares in the island's North Western Province. It is best known for two things: its population of Sri Lankan leopards (one of the highest densities in the country) and its distinctive 'Willus' — natural, sand-rimmed lakes that dot the landscape and attract wildlife from all around.
Why choose Wilpattu over other parks?
Compared with Yala in the south, Wilpattu is significantly quieter. You will rarely share a sighting with a crowd of jeeps. The park's mix of dense scrub forest, open plains and wetland edges makes it excellent for leopards, sloth bears and elephants, as well as a superb birding destination.
