The best time to visit Wilpattu National Park is during the dry season, roughly from February to September. As water sources dry up, animals concentrate around the remaining Willus (natural lakes), which makes them far easier to find.
Dry season (February – September)
This is prime safari season. Vegetation thins out, visibility improves, and leopard and sloth bear sightings become more reliable. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times of day for big-cat activity.
Green season (October – January)
The park may close for a period during the heaviest rains when the sandy roads become impassable. When it is open, the landscape turns lush and green, birds are abundant, and the park feels even wilder. If you plan a trip between October and January, check current park status before booking.
Best time of day
- ✓Morning safari — jeeps typically enter at sunrise (around 6:00 AM); leopards returning from a night of hunting are a highlight.
- ✓Afternoon/evening safari — good for elephants, deer and birds near the lakes, plus beautiful golden light for photography.
